Non-TTL Auto Flash Mode. Information on this appears earlier in the chapter.
Auto Aperture Flash (with modeling illumination; this is the default)
Auto Aperture Flash (without modeling illumination)
Non-TTL Auto Flash (with modeling illumination)
Non-TTL Auto Flash (without modeling illumination)
Repeating Flash Setting of Master Flash Unit. By turning this function on, you allow the SB-900 to control multiple remote Speedlights in the repeating flash mode.
Flash Output Level at Manual Mode. Setting this function to on allows you to adjust the output level in manual mode between 1/1 (full) and half power in 1/3EV steps. The default setting has this function turned off so there is a full EV step between full and half power.
SU-4 Type Wireless Multiple Flash Shooting. Activating this function puts the flash into SU-4 mode in both master and remote settings. It disables the CLS and pre-flashes. The flash operates as a simple optical slave or remote.
Illumination Pattern. This allows you to choose your illumination pattern and how much light fall-off you have at the edge of the image frame. You can choose center-weighted (CW), standard (STD), or even (EVEN) illumination. (More on this later in the chapter.)
Test Firing Button. There are two options for the function of your test firing button: flash and modeling.
Pressing the flash button will cause the flash to fire a single pop. This is the default setting.
Pressing the modeling button will cause a continuous series of flashes for about 1.5 seconds. Acting like a modeling lamp on a studio strobe, this allows you to see the effect the flash will have on your subject and check the lighting patterns and shadows.
Flash Output Level of Test Firing in i-TTL Mode. This determines the output level of the test fire when the Speedlight is set to the i-TTL mode. You can choose between 1/128 power (the default), 1/32 power, or 1/1 (full) power. (Note: When the flash is set to the auto or manual modes, it will fire at the selected settings.)
FX/DX Selection. The default setting for this function is for the flash to detect automatically whether it is attached to a FX- or DX-format camera. The flash will automatically change the light distribution angle based on the camera’s image area between the FX and DX format. This saves power by making sure that the light from the Speedlight is used in the most efficient manner. The custom function allows you to disable the automatic function and manually set the Speedlight to FX or DX.
Power Zoom Off. The Speedlight has an automatic zoom function that adjusts the flash head to match the focal length of your lens. By turning this function to “on” you are turning off the power zoom. The default setting is to have this custom function off; this means that the flash will automatically power zoom.
AF-Assist Illuminator/Flash Firing Off. The AF-assist Illuminator uses red LEDs to project a lighting pattern onto the subject. This helps give the scene some contrast that the camera’s autofocus can lock onto in low-light situations. This function can be set to on (default) or off.
